Life’s a journey. It’s about getting from where you are today to where you want to be in the future, and enjoying it. Most people envision a future of relaxation, comfort and security - a time to reflect, to slow down the pace, to enjoy family, and to do things that there hasn’t been time for before.

But while most people have the vision, not many have the plan to go with it. And in “life’s a journey” terms, that’s equivalent to not having a map. To fail to plan, as they say, is to plan to fail.

Don’t think that the state is going to look after you. They’ll keep you alive, but that’s about it. Government pension funding is pitiful.

You stand an infinitely better chance of successfully meeting your objectives if you proactively plan to move from A to B. Without a plan, you’re just wandering aimlessly, and arriving at B - assuming you even realise you’re there - will be achieved only by a stroke of luck, which in financial terms means a windfall such as an inheritance, which may not be very lucky for someone else.

Relying on luck is not a viable financial plan – it’s just burying your head in the sand. You owe it to yourself to plan for your future so that you can enjoy your life to the full.

Please, do not be one of those people who I occasionally meet far too late to help in any meaningful or significant way. With retirement planning, the earlier you get on top of it the better. There is a point of no return beyond which no one can help you.
